Let the pro’s lip sync…

Milli and Vanilli

Milli and Vanilli

For a little Sunday fun it’s always good to see your heroes not “selling out” to the evils of the lip synched track on live broadcast. I have watched the video of the Who on the Smothers Brothers numerous times and I laugh every time. Keith Moon’s performance is genius and unforgettable! Fixing his hair on the drum breaks, tapping the cymbal’s on tom fills, and throwing his sticks around everywhere. I heard a story that he didn’t tell the guys that he was putting a real explosive in his bass drum and you can see him tentatively hitting it as they are smashing up their instruments; the bomb doesn’t go off until Pete is right in front of the drum and he appears from the cloud of smoke with his hair standing up like he just got electrocuted. I read that he attributed some of his hearing loss because of that explosion.

The second video is great because these are some of the finest musicians to have ever played! Charlie Parker is laughing at Coleman Hawkins while he is trying to play his solo straight, and then when Charlie Parker starts playing an amazingly fast solo he doesn’t even move at all. Buddy Rich takes a drum solo and plays the high hats at the end instead of the snare and leaves beats out purposefully during his solo. It’s great! (There is also a Muse video of them doing this same thing but if you are interested you can dig it up).
